How to Manage Holiday Stress: 4 tips that make a big difference

Late December is here. Learning how to manage holiday stress can be the difference between being a frantic, stressed out business owner and having a wonderful holiday with your family and friends.

Most of us are feeling some holiday stress right now, as we balance our work, families, and commitments. Just thinking about the expectations we (and our families and relatives) have for the holiday can result in panic. How will we manage to get it all done and run our business? Add to that the gift-giving decisions and holiday travel plans, and soon we are stressed to our capacity.

There are things we can do right now to reduce our stress level and make the holidays more meaningful and joyful.

Here are 4 small business (and life) tips for how to manage holiday stress.

1. Prioritize what you say “yes” to. There are only so many hours in the day and choosing carefully will make a big difference in your stress level and quality of life this holiday season.

2. Get organized. Ever notice how things fall through the cracks when we are disorganized? As the pace becomes faster this week and next, creating a schedule that works for everyone involved and having activities organized is a way to reduce anxiety.

3. Keep it simple. Stop over-complicating plans, schedules, and activities. Focus on what is truly important and remember the simple things are sometimes the very best things in life.

4. Be good to yourself as well as others. At the end of the day, learn from the situations that came up, both the pleasant and the not-so-wonderful. Take those lessons into the next day. We only go around this life once. Live it to the fullest.

Let us all remember this quote from Maya Angelou:

“I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way (s)he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.”
