Holiday Inspiration: What is the legacy we want to leave?
Here we are, 2 days away from the Christmas holiday. This week has been filled with thoughts about legacy…what do we want to leave or bequest to others, both in our lifetime and when we are no longer here? Consider this your holiday inspiration gift.
Right now, I am in Ohio spending quality time with family and friends. Monday I spent time with my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Lloyd, who was a key influencer in my life way back in the mid 60’s. My conversation with her reminded me of the high value of leaving a legacy that matters.
Holiday Inspiration from My 5th Grade Teacher
Mrs. Lloyd loved teaching in the small rural community where there was (and still is) a high poverty rate. She taught all her 4th and 5th grade students not only to learn but to expand our horizons and know that we could become something much greater than our current environment. She was my heroine that year (when there was a lot of turmoil in our home)….and continues to be today.
At 81 and using oxygen daily as a result of ongoing lung issues, she continues to inspire and stay connected with her former students across the world on Facebook. She has a quiet yet powerful influence on so many still today. This is her legacy. In retrospect, she now sees this is why she was the only child (of 4) born to her parents to survive. She was given a mission and she has fulfilled it with both grace and persistence over the years.
When I asked her what she’d like me to bring for our time together, she said “All I want is a visit.” Her greatest desire at this point in her life is to spend time with her family, friends, and students who take time to share their successes with her.
This wonderful season is all about caring and sharing….in the ways that truly count. What are the memories and legacy you will leave those you love this holiday season?
